John’s now fixing to leave Falkirk business after 40 years
From the Falkirk Herald on 5 September 2014 - by James Trimble
An engineer who cared for customers’ cars for 40 years handed over his business to a new owner this week.
John Martin’s Motor Engineers has been a Falkirk firm generations of drivers could trust, from its beginnings in South Melville Lane to its current home for the last 27 years in Unit 1, Comely Place.
Now John (66) is calling time on a 40-year career keeping cars on the road.
He said: “I graduated as a mining engineer but I’ve been involved with cars since I was 10. I always wanted to start my own business and when I came out of the Merchant Navy in 1974 I began John Martin Motor Engineers.
“Initially it was just servicing and repairs, but since 1988 it’s been a registered MOT tester too - the closest station to Falkirk town centre.”
John officially handed over the reins to experienced Andy McAinsh (50), a fellow Camelon man, on Monday and feels he can rest easy because he is leaving his customers in good hands.
“I’ve had three generations of motorists come to me over the years and I want to thank all of them for their support and loyalty.
“That’s one of the reasons I picked Andy to take things over - to make sure I left my people in safe hands.”
One of John’s proudest memories is the success his fab four apprentices enjoyed over the decades. John Ward, Tom Travers, Peter Nielsen and Jim Johnson all went on to bigger and better things after serving their time with John.
“As an engineer I always liked the hands on part of the job,” said John. “And a lot of my customers also became my good friends.”
Now retired, John plans to see a lot more of two-year-old grandson Marti and take more trips in his touring car with wife Elizabeth.
Andy said he plans to retain the John Martin name for the time being.
